Gridiron Glory: “The Big Game” Data Analysis + Paper Football Math Project
A Sports Data Analysis Math Project
It’s hard to get students excited about “data analysis” in the abstract. But give them football stats and a reason to argue their case? Now the math matters.
Gridiron Glory is a football data analysis math project that guides students through statistics-based assignments and culminates in a Paper Football tournament where they use expected value to make smarter decisions.
Suggested Grade Level: 7–12 (middle school through high school)
Best for: Probability, Statistics, Data Analysis
How This Football Math Project Works
Students work through a variety of football-based assignments connected to the Statistics and Probability strands. The pacing is intentionally flexible: some components work beautifully in middle school, and others are a stronger fit for high school.
The project builds toward a high-energy finale: a Paper Football tournament where students use expected value to guide strategy and justify choices with math.
Skills Students Practice
